Lesson Plans on State Parks

Grade Level: 6-8, Social Studies

Sunshine State Standards:
  • SS.A.6.3.3 - Knows the unique geographic and demographic characteristics that define Florida as a region.
  • SS.A.6.3.4 - Knows how the environment of Florida has been modified by the values, traditions, and actions of various groups who have inhabited the state.
  • SS.B.2.3.2. - Knows the human and physical characteristics of different places in the world and how these characteristics change over time.

Objective: Using the internet and MS Works, students will be able to identify and describe different state parks with 90% accuracy.

Materials:
  • Internet
  • MS Works; Powerpoint; Word
  • Laptop cart
  • Classroom computers

Instructions:
  • Monday - Students will be choosing which state park they would like to research and do their projects on. Students should all have different state parks. Have them research sites, some included on the Student Activity Page (II). They will then create a brochure using Microsoft Works. They should give at least ten facts in the brochure.
  • Tuesday - Have the students partner up today. Each of the pairs should go over their previous day's research and further their research today. The students will use Kidspiration to make flowcharts on the similarities and dissimilarities of both of the state parks they chose. They should include lots of pictures!!
  • Wednesday - This will be an individual project today. Students will make a map of their chosen state park using the paint program. they must include the locations of water, forestry, trails, rent locations, restrooms, etc.
  • Thursday - The students will just be reflecting today on everything they have learned so far about Florida's State Parks. They will be writing a short reflection and answering questions I have asked. They may like to do further research today so they will need computers.
  • Friday - Today the students get to watch a video about the Suwannee River. They will individually create a newsletter in MS Works. The newsletter should include at least three articles, three pictures, and headlines.
All of the weeks assignments will be due on the following Monday - December 14th.
